Flowers are a perennial favourite

Flowers and plants in general are like children: it’s difficult to choose a favourite because each is special in its own way.

When it comes to gifts for Mother’s Day, the variety of plants and flowers available is extended by the many ways in which they may be presented.

They come in every kind of container, for example, from hanging baskets to woven baskets, or pots in numerous colours, sizes and materials, or arrangements with or without vases and even with their own water supply.

Corsages are another possibility. Liberty’s Flowers and Wedding Supplies in West Bay makes up corsages from a variety of fresh flowers for Mom to wear on her special day.

Those who want to honour a deceased mother may find comfort in silk flowers or arrangements suitable for placement at her grave.

People who work in floral shops and nurseries are not only nurturing and creative, but also easy to talk to. If you don’t know what you want, give them just a hint of an idea and they will turn it into reality.

Does Mom have a favourite colour? Does she like flowers with fragrance? Is she an active gardener?

Do you want to see what an arrangement might look like before you order it? Some stores, like Celebrations, have brochures just for Mother’s Day. You can look over the possibilities at your convenience and then call in an order.

Some local florists even have websites with colour photos of arrangements to choose from.

Flowers and plants come in a wide price range, Patrick Panton points out. At East End Garden and Gifts, for example, you might find the perfect present for anywhere from $3 to $300. It may be an indoor or outdoor plant, a seasonal blossom or even a fruit tree such as mango, star apple for Mom’s yard.

Several stores have brought in orchids and bromeliads for Mother’s Day. These and other exotics are beautiful on their own or in combination.

Gift baskets are the most popular seller for Mother’s Day, according to Liberty’s florist Viola Powell. Fresh roses, lilies, carnations, gladioli, daisies and tulips can be may be combined with such indulgences as champagne, scented candles, perfume or stuffed animals.

For the do-it-herself Mom, don’t forget new gardening gloves, hand tools and new plants or flowers to inspire her.
