CI Marathon teams up with Cancer Society

The Cancer Society joins the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps as the beneficiaries of the proceeds from the Cayman Islands Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 3 December 2006, and organizers expect both non-profit organisations to enhance the quality of the event and increase the response from the community.

‘We are so excited to have these two great partners alongside us for this event,’ says Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd., the owner and organizer of the Cayman Islands Marathon. ‘The Cadets have been the chosen charity since the Marathon’s inception and they have been invaluable to us. We would not be able to pull off this event if it were not for the cadets and their parents who volunteer tirelessly to ensure that the race goes off smoothly. We are equally pleased to welcome the Cayman Islands Cancer Society to the Marathon family. The Society’s profile in the Cayman community gives increased credibility to our event and provides us with access to a great market through its membership of individuals of all ages and fitness capabilities. We look forward to working with both of these worthy organisations to promote the importance of health and fitness here in Cayman.’

‘According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), the evidence suggests that one third of the 550,000 cancer deaths that occur in the United States each year are due to unhealthy diet and insufficient physical activity,’ states Christine Sanders, General Manager at the Cancer Society. ‘Although we don’t have the statistics for Cayman readily available, I am sure that this figure is also borne out in our community when you break it down for our population. We need to be on a continuous journey toward better health and increased cancer awareness. Our partnership with the Marathon will be mutually beneficial because the proceeds that we receive from the event will allow us to achieve some of our objectives while the community participation in the race that we hope to encourage will help to promote quality health and improved fitness in the Cayman Islands. It is definitely a win-win situation.’

Registration for the marathon (26.2 miles), half-marathon (13.1 miles) and 4-person relay (6.1 miles each) is now open and can be completed online at www.CaymanIslandsMarathon.com or by mail. Discounts are available for early registrants. The Cayman Islands Marathon Health & Fitness Expo will be held on Saturday, 2 December and booths are also now available for those companies who would like to exhibit their health-related products and services.
