US recalled products not in Cayman

The Public Health Department has advised that last week’s recall in the US of certain products (carrot juice, turkey sandwiches, and lettuce) need not concern the local population as inspections by Environmental Health Officers indicate that these products are not in inventories of local importers, states a GIS press release.

Last week following products were voluntarily recalled by the companies in US:

Carrot juice:

Bolthouse Farms 100 per cent Carrot Juice – 1 litre and 450 millilitre sizes

Earthbound Farm Organic Carrot Juice – 1 liter and 450 millilitre sizes

President’s Choice Organic 100 per cent Pure Carrot Juice – 1 litre and 450 millilitre sizes.

The recall, due to threat of botulism, extended to products carrying dates up to and including 11 November, 2006.

Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium commonly found in soil. Under certain conditions these bacteria can produce a toxin that if ingested can result in botulism, a disease that may cause paralysis or death.

Tuscan Sun Turkey Sandwiches, with a production code of 35E, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Green Leaf lettuce under the Foxy brand. The recalled lettuce was packaged as Green Leaf 24 Count, waxed carton, and Green Leaf 18 Count, cellophane sleeve, returnable carton. Packaging is stamped with lot code 6SL0024.

Although these products are not available in Cayman, Dr Kiran Kumar, director of Public Health, advised the public that has purchased such products in US to throw them away.

‘We will continue to monitor the situation and to keep the public informed,’ he said.
