Calendar encourages peace

A new calendar is encouraging a peaceful way of life.

Photographer Courtney Platt and yoga enthusiast Joanna Lawrence – who worked together on the coffee table book Paradise Interrupted – have once again joined forces to work on a colourful wall calendar for 2007.

Live in Peace is a stunning collection of 15 images taken island-wide, accompanied by yoga poses and up-lifting inspirational text for each month.

The images span from the sheer breathtaking beauty of Seven Mile Beach to the peaceful sanctuary under a billowing Royal Poinciana tree in full bloom. Each image depicts peace and tranquillity.

Ms Lawrence, who poses in the calendar, has been a yoga enthusiast for the past year and brings both the yoga positions and its philosophies to the calendar.

The text which accompanies each month has been written by Ms Lawrence and inspired by personal experiences.

‘It’s not religious or doctrinal. It is just a philosophy about living in peace,’ she said.

‘I wanted to do something which was positive. This calendar is not just about pretty pictures. It is designed to inspire and up-lift.’

Mr. Platt contributed his photographic skills, ensuring a delightful collection of stunning images.

‘The calendar is intended to help people restore emotionally,’ he said. ‘People have done a lot of recovering from [hurricane] Ivan. This calendar is about recovering spiritually.’

While some images posed a challenge, such as ones taken at Sand Key, others came together seamlessly.

‘A lot of things went together as if God was willing it. Everything just fell into place,’ he said.

‘The picture for March was actually just an impromptu test-shot done underwater along Seven Mile Beach. I actually had another location in mind with a lot of bright coral, but it just happened to come out perfectly.’

Mr. Platt’s favourite picture is the Royal Poinciana tree for the month of July, taken at Church of God on Walkers Road.

‘I love the colours. From a photographer’s point of view it is one of the prettiest,’ he enthused.

Each element of the calendar has been meticulously planned, from the choice of yoga positions, the accompanying text to the choice of colours Ms Lawrence wears in each image.

Those with a keen eye will spot the strategic placing of the calendar’s title on the front cover.

‘The bird just happened to fly by as the shot was captured,’ Platt said. ‘We positioned the text accordingly and it made for a perfect finishing touch.’

The calendar includes not only Cayman Islands’ public holidays but US ones as well, alongside notable dates and regular annual events.

The Live in Peace calendar, priced at $12, is available island-wide, including all major supermarkets, Hobbies and Books, Cayman Camera, The Camera Store, National Museum, the National Gallery, Pure Art Gallery and Atlantic Submarine. For further information, contact the photographer on 945-3939.
