Men charged with possession of bullet-proof vest

Two men appeared in Summary Court on Thursday afternoon charged with possession of a bullet-proof vest without the prior approval of the Commissioner of Police.

Harrington Valdespino Rivers, 25, and Otis Melbourne Myles, 20, were remanded in custody until today.

They were also jointly charged with burglary of an apartment on 9 October. They are accused of stealing the bullet-proof vest, a police radio and charger, a police medal and jewellery, all the property of a police officer. Total value of the items was put at $2,462.

According to the Firearms Law, a person convicted of possessing a bullet-proof vest without approval is liable to a fine of $100,000 and to imprisonment for 20 years.

Crown Counsel Kirsty-Ann Gunn did not give any details of the charges. She did tell Magistrate Nova Hall that investigations were continuing into other matters.

Defence Attorney Ben Tonner, who represented Myles, said he would wait for papers from the Crown before making a bail application. On behalf of Rivers, he held for Attorney John Furniss, who was in Cayman Brac for court there.

Both defendants have addresses in the Prospect area.
