A Cayman delegation is in the United Kingdom this week attending the eighth annual meeting of the Overseas Territories Consultative Council at the Foreign Commonwealth Office in London.
‘The annual Council meeting provides an excellent forum for consultation with leaders of the Territories’ governments,’ said Lord Triesman, Overseas Territories Minister who is hosting this year’s meeting.
The OTCC was established in 1999 as a forum for discussion of key policy issues with heads of ten territory governments. The Council meets once a year in London. An FCO Minister has specific responsibilities for Overseas Territory issues.
The event will be attended by the Premiers, Chief Ministers and equivalent senior politicians from Britain’s Overseas Territories. The Council is held annually in London and provides a forum for consultation with British Government Ministers.
The delegation from the Cayman Islands is being led by Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts.
He is accompanied by Minister of Education Alden McLaughlin, Attorney General Samuel Bulgin, Financial Secretary Kenneth Jefferson, Cabinet Secretary Orrett Connor, Cayman Islands UK Representative Jennifer Dilbert, and Political Analyst Barbara Conolly.
On this year’s agenda is a specific segment of meetings to be attended by all OT Governors including Cayman Islands Governor Stuart Jack.
This year’s discussions cover such topics as the UK-OT relationship, transport issues, good governance, human rights, criminal justice strategies, combating international corruption.
Sir Nicholas Stern will give a presentation about climate change which is a global threat but which has particularly severe implications for small island OTs like the Cayman Islands.
The territories represented at the OTCC are:
British Virgin Islands
Turks and Caicos Islands
