The Health Practice Council Registrar and Immigration Department officials last week ordered a person working at the Colombia Expo to stop providing medical advice and diagnoses to the public.
HPC Registrar Shirlene Henriques said the person was also ordered to not practice at any location in the Cayman Islands.
After an investigation into the matter, HPC and Immigration officials determined that the person had not applied to be registered as a health practitioner in Cayman, and also did not have the correct work permit to practice medicine.
The person did have a temporary work permit, but as a salesman, not as a health practitioner, states a press release.
Individuals who visited the person and were given treatment recommendations are advised to verify the recommendations with their private physicians, Mrs. Henriques said.
She noted that the HPC’s actions were in accordance with section 38 of the Health Practice Law (2005 revision). ‘The council is responsible for the safety of the public,’ she noted.
‘Part of this is ensuring that whoever wants to practice in the Cayman Islands as a health practitioner is qualified to do so, and also is properly registered with the HPC.’
The Colombian Expo wrapped up Monday.
