Repeat offences of shoplifting led to a sentence of six weeks imprisonment for Dennis Ricardo Gallimore.
Gallimore, 25, was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to three charges of theft and one of possession of ganja.
He asked if he could pay a fine, but Magistrate Grace Donalds said there was no question of a fine because of the number of thefts involved.
She asked him about his status on the island. Gallimore, a Jamaican national, said there was a work permit application in for him.
The magistrate told him that, with criminal convictions, it was unlikely he would get a permit.
One of the theft charges covered several shoplifting incidents.
Gallimore admitted entering a West Bay Road clothing store on various occasions between 1 December 2006 and 15 February 2007 and stealing six shirts valued at $385.
Crown Counsel Laura Manson said Gallimore went into the store on 15 February and took a shirt from a rack at the back of the store. He was seen stuffing the shirt under the clothes he was wearing.
When questioned at the door, he denied taking anything. When he was detained, however, he took out the shirt, threw it down and tried to escape. Police were called to the store and they arrested him.
When questioned, the defendant admitted having other shirts from the store at his home. Officers searched and found six more.
On another charge, Gallimore pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of sunglasses from a supermarket on 20 October.
Ms Manson said Gallimore was seen putting the glasses on his head and later walking out of the store. When challenged, he said he had tried them on and then forgot they were there. The glasses were valued at $14.
Police were called and when they searched his pockets, a quantity of vegetable matter was found. It was analysed and found to be 1.9929 grams of ganja.
The matter first came to court on 19 February, when Gallimore was remanded in custody.
The magistrate directed that he be given credit for time in custody.
