Little Cayman’s own gourmet chef, Gladys Howard, delighted guests and residents of the tiny island with her culinary skills and witty repertoire at the Little Cayman Classic cooking demonstration last week.
The event, which took place at the National Trust House, was part of the upcoming Cayman Classic food & wine festival and featured demonstrations of delicious dishes such as Grilled Fish with Papaya Salsa and Green Papaya Citrus Salad, said a press release.
‘We were delighted to be able to bring the Cayman Classic to Little Cayman and include the Sister Islands in one of our national events,’ said Manager, National Promotions & Events for the Department of Tourism Rosa McLean. ‘The event gave our guests just a taste of what to expect at the Classic and the feedback I received from those who attended was excellent.’
Gladys Howard has lived in Little Cayman for over 21 years. Prior to owning Pirates Point Resort, she operated an international cooking school and gourmet catering service for 20 years in Tyler, Texas. She also appeared in a series of cooking shows in KLTV, Channel 7, in Tyler, said the release.
‘Her background of a B.S. in Home Economics from the University of Texas, several diplomas from cooking schools in France, plus classes with noted TV cooking school stars, James Beard, Julia Child and Jacque Pepin, has made this talented chef an artist in her field’ the release noted.
Ms Howard, who serves as chairperson of the Little Cayman District of the National Trust, is an environmentalist who believes in the preservation of the natural beauty of Little Cayman and the conservation of marine life, birds, iguanas, plants and historical traditions of the Cayman Islands.
All of the featured dishes can be found in Gladys’ cook book ‘Cook’ in Little Cayman’. All proceeds from sales of this cook book are donated to the Little Cayman District of the National Trust.
