Fire hits Camana Bay

No one injured in basement area

Cayman Islands Fire Inspectors are investigating the cause of a large fire that broke out Monday in the basement of a planned parking garage in the Camana Bay development.

Construction workers spotted the flames shortly after 5pm, quickly realised the fire was too large for them to contain on their own and called the Fire Service.

The fire was reported under control by 7pm Monday.

‘It’s a vast basement area,’ said Deputy Fire Chief Dennom Bodden. ‘It wasn’t actually the building itself (that burned). It was just some content storage.’

Mr. Bodden said there were no injuries in the fire. He said the extent of the damage wasn’t clear on Monday night.

Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd. Communications Manager Susanna Blackburn said the building where the fire started is in the second phase of the Camana Bay development’s town centre.

‘It was in a basement, which will be an underground parking structure beneath restaurant row,’ Ms Blackburn said.

Ms Blackburn said workers at the site cleared out of the area shortly after flames broke out.
