LC going green

Little Cayman is about to go green.

New equipment and facilities at the island’s landfill will allow residents to separate recyclable and garden waste from non-recyclable waste.

Non-recyclable waste will be burned in a new air-curtain incinerator rather than in the open air, reducing emissions by about 85 per cent.

Garden waste products will be turned into mulch, which residents will be able to collect free from the landfill

The Department of Environmental Health would even like to start composting at the facility, said DEH Assistant Director Sean McGinn.

He said the new measures are a sign of things to come in the Cayman Islands.

‘This is the beginning of what’s coming for solid waste management in the Cayman Islands. This is the first step.’

The new equipment includes a Caterpillar D5 bulldozer with waste handling package, an air-curtain incinerator, a bobcat with attachments and a portable light tower with a generator.

Recyclable waste will be stored in a new waste storage building at the landfill before being transferred to Grand Cayman for further processing. It will then be removed off island.

A community meeting on the island in late March revealed huge community support for recycling and greener waste disposal measures, Mr. McGinn said.

‘We need a lot of community support to make this work and people on Little Cayman are very enthusiastic about the plan.’

The Caterpillar bulldozer, portable light tower and generator will be used to clean up dumped garbage at the Little Cayman landfill and to construct some of the new facilities. It will then go to Cayman Brac for landfill operations there.
