A man and a woman died in a Saturday morning car accident on Cayman Brac after the vehicle they were riding in crashed into a tree.
Police said the accident was reported around 8.30am on Stake Bay Road near the Public Works building.
According to witnesses, firefighters had to cut through a section of the vehicle before the man who had been driving the car and his female passenger could be removed.
Both victims were transported to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The driver was a 45-year-old man from Spot Bay. The passenger was a 45-year-old woman from Stake Bay.
Police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Officers could not immediately release a cause for the accident, but a police official said they were looking at both speed and alcohol as potential factors.
The fatalities are the sixth and seventh on Cayman Islands roads so far this year, but they are the first to occur in the Brac for some time.
A recent review of Royal Cayman Islands Police statistics showed no fatal wrecks on the Brac last year or in 2005.
Anyone who may have witnessed Saturday’s crash or who has information about it is asked to contact the RCIPS Brac police station at 948-0331.
