Young Footballers in Brazil

A select group of young Caymanian footballers recently trained in Brazil.

The names of the footballers are Fabio Gall, Roderick Pearson, Dexter Benliss and Michael Gourzong. The young men participated in a football camp hosted by Brazilian side Vasco Da Gama.

Vasco Da Gama is among Brazil’s better local sides. The club finished 6th in the Brazilian league in 2006 and is a four-time winner. It has also produced some of Brazil’s best footballers including Romario and Vagner.

The players travelled to Brazil on 22 July. They were sponsored by football clubs in North Side and East End along with the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA).

The players are currently in the CIFA Boys U-16 and U-13 leagues. They represent three football clubs: Catholic, East End UFC and Bodden Town FC.

According to CIFA Treasurer Canover Watson, this is the fourth consecutive year footballers have gone to a Brazilian camp. He says CIFA is proud to again be sending players.

Watson went on to say that the camps have made young Caymanians not only better players but better people.

‘The youngsters we’ve sent over the past three years have all come back as stronger individuals.’
