Digicel Cayman has appointed Mr. John Byrne as general manager of Digicel’s operations in the Cayman Islands to lead the company into its next stage of dynamic growth.
John assumed the new GM role effective 1 August.
JD Buckley, Digicel Cayman & Northern Caribbean CEO (Cayman, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos) and the man responsible for successfully leading Digicel’s launch in the Cayman Islands in 2004 and the company’s subsequent growth, will be stepping down at the end of September to pursue business interests in Ireland.

Since joining the Digicel Group in 2003, Mr. Byrne has played an instrumental role in the development and success of Digicel operations throughout the Caribbean and most recently in the Cayman Islands where he joined in 2004 and has been instrumental in the growth of the company over the past three years.
He brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role, with 15 years overall telecommunications experience in Ireland and the Caribbean including engineering, market research, project management and sales experience.
Following his success in the Irish telecommunications industry, John joined the Digicel Group in 2003. John was actively involved with the launches of many Digicel markets including St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Anguilla, St. Marten, St. Kitts & Nevis, Barbados and Antigua.
John joined the Digicel Cayman team in March, 2004 and has been instrumental in developing the sales function in the local operation. He has also driven the rollout of the company’s Broadband solution for corporate customers. As a result of this, Digicel is now the Broadband provider of choice for several major hotels on the island as well as many other high profile corporate customers in the financial sector and other industries.
Digicel launched in the Cayman Islands on March 3rd, 2004, after acquiring a licence to operate in September 2003. The Cayman operation has grown to include 11 dealer stores and over 50 employees.
With investments exceeding US$25 million in the Cayman Islands, Digicel Cayman has been responsible for introducing strong competition into the market and driving mobile penetration through superior services, reliable coverage and high value offerings. The company also offers a wide range handsets at affordable prices and was the first to bring innovative products and services to the Cayman Islands such as rollover minutes, prepaid roaming, closed user groups, and WiMax technology.
