Digicel stays perfect

The Digicel Chuggers improved to 3-0 with an impressive 10-6 victory over the previously undefeated LOM/Cay Brew in co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams on Monday.

The Chuggers used six-run third inning to open up an 8-1 lead and then staved off a late LOM/Cay Brew comeback attempt.

Neil Clements went 3 for 3 with runs and 2 RBI and Brendon Malice went 2 for 3 with two runs and a two-run home run to pace the Chuggers offensively. Malice also made the defensive play of the game with a sliding catch in centerfield.

Digicel Coach Alan Markoff was pleased with his team’s effort.

‘Our defence probably played its best game of the year,’ he said. ‘And when we did make errors, they did not cost us too badly.’

The normally potent Chuggers girls struggled at the plate, going 1 for 9.

‘I know they can do better than that, and they usually do,’ said Markoff. ‘Maybe they were distracted by Patrick [Bourgue].’

Bourque, who has supplanted Shawn Wilcox as the Chuggers chief agitator, was called obnoxious by Wilcox.

‘I don’t know about that,’ said Markoff. ‘But hitting two first-pitch pop-ups to the pitcher is very obnoxious.’

Mark Wallace, who was moved to the outfield this season after donkey years at third base, said he likes the outfield because he can practice his frog-calling technique easier from out there.

‘The outfield is closer to the swamp, so the frogs hear me better and can answer,’ he said.
