Taste of Cayman this weekend

Foodies are in for a treat this Saturday as the annual Taste of Cayman swings into action.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this year’s event, from 5pm at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, offers a bigger and better event than ever before.

The Taste, as it is often referred to by locals, showcases a selection of local and international cuisine from over 30 local restaurants, washed down with drinks from a fully stocked cash bar featuring local Caymanian beers. Catering to the young and old alike, visitors are free to wander from booth to booth sampling some of Cayman’s finest fare, from sumptuous entrees to divine desserts.

New this year to the culinary event is Italian restaurant Casanova, Cayman Islands Brewery, Icoa Fine Foods, My Place Restaurant and the Triple Crown. Returning favourites include Britannia, Cracked Conch, Breezes by the Bay, Hard Rock Café, the Wharf, Solana, Periwinkle, Lone Star, Cimboco and Chicken! Chicken!.

Each restaurant will be showcasing its signature dish, with fare running the gamut from traditional Caribbean dishes, including Jamaican jerk chicken and Caymanian rum cakes, to cuisine from across the globe.

In addition to the food, there is also a host of other activities. The music line-up includes entertainment by local bands Hi Tide, Sea N’ B, Swanky, Musical Crew, Tassa Drummers, and Red White and Blues, as well as local DJs spinning the tunes.

New this year will be fireworks, planned to light up the sky from 10pm. There will also be ample activities to keep youngsters occupied with a Kid’s Corner, featuring fun activities such as storytelling, arts, crafts and face painting. In addition, the Cayman Islands Humane Society, Cayman Islands Red Cross and the National Trust for the Cayman Islands will be present at the event.

Residents of East End and Seven Mile Beach will be able to take advantage of free shuttle buses to and from the event.

Kathryn Parks, Taste of Cayman volunteer, said this year’s event has been revved up a notch to mark the 20th anniversary.

‘This year we really have more of everything, a bigger venue, fireworks and a bigger entertainment line-up than ever before. This year’s Taste is going to be an event to remember.’

Now a mainstay on the yearly entertainment calendar, Taste of Cayman is a fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Lighthouse School, Pines Retirement Centre and to help fund the Cayman Islands Tourism Association Scholarship Fund.

Owner of the Lone Star Bar & Grill, Mike Flowers, is the founding father of Taste of Cayman.

‘The best thing about the Taste is that through the years we have had many restaurants eager to participate to help our chosen charities, always at their own cost.

‘Now that the Cayman Islands Tourism Association has taken it over, we have the resources of our 200 plus members from all different sectors to pitch in to make this event a huge success.’

He added: ‘So far, with proceeds from the Taste, we have been able to build a special needs playground for the Lighthouse School, which was subsequently destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, and then we were able to re-build it again last year. We have also purchased a new school bus this year.’

Following Saturday’s gastronomic event, the Taste wraps up with a golf tournament. Golfers of varying expertise are invited to tee off at Britannia Golf Course, from 8am.

Advance tickets, priced at $40, includes entry into the prize draw to win a slew of prizes, including one of two Mini Coopers from GT Automotive, and trips to Havana, Little Cayman, Cayman Brac and New York.

Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the gate, including entry into the prize draw. For admission only, tickets are $25, $10 for children. Tickets can be purchased at First Caribbean, George Town, Fosters Strand and Countryside, Hurley’s Grand Harbour and Kirk Supermarket on North Church Street.
