Kids keep tackling in Maples tournament

Local youth are hitting hard to be Cayman’s best.

The second round of the Maples Community Rugby Championship (MCRC) took place on Saturday 23 February. The action started at 8:30am and went on until 1pm at the South Sound Rugby Club.

Some hundred kids were on the pitch throughout the day. They were divided into six different age groups: U4, U6, U8 U10, U12 and U14-U16. An especially significant turnout was seen in the U14-U16 division which had some forty boys.

All of the kids were placed on teams according to their district. The five districts represented were West Bay, South Sound, Prospect, Bodden Town and East End.

Two games were played at a time with each one taking place on one half of the pitch.

The results and standings for the tournament will be released at a later date.

The third and fourth rounds of the tournament will take place on Saturday 8 March and 12 April.

The tournament is set to be a major training ground for the U10 and U12 players. They will face international competition in the months to come.

Their first major test will be when the Bermuda national teams come to play Cayman 2-5 May.
