The teenager who police said was fleeing a traffic stop Friday night and crashed the car he was driving into a utility pole is expected to survive.
The 19-year-old, whose name is not being released by the Caymanian Compass because of potential criminal charges in the case, suffered broken legs and other severe injuries but is now said to be recovering in a Miami hospital.
Royal Cayman Islands Police officers said the teen was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Investigators were also looking at the pursuing officers’ claims that the licence plates on the vehicle did not match the car to which they were registered.
Two other men in the car died after the vehicle struck an electricity pole along West Bay Road near the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman.
The RCIPS had not given a reason for why officers initiated a pursuit along Kings Road in West Bay that night, but an investigation is being conducted into the chase.
