ICCI gets first library donation

Cayman Airways delivered the first donation to the International College of the Cayman Islands on 17 March.

This January the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Central requested the help of Cayman Islands residents in restocking the ICCI library, which was destroyed during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, states a press release.

While the campus of the college has been rebuilt, including a new library, there are no books to fill the shelves.

Many overseas universities and colleges have a surplus of textbooks that are not being used, are in need of replacement or are up for resale at a drastically reduced price.

‘ICCI is extremely grateful for the tremendous level of support we are receiving in restocking our library. This support will help us restore the jewel of our campus; a fully serviceable library for our students and for our community’ stated Scott Cummings, dean of the International College of the Cayman Islands.

The donation consisted of programming text books from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, USA.

‘I am pleased that my alma mater stepped up to the plate and contributed to this urgent cause’ said Nickii Sonnenberg of Rotary Central, ‘Dr. George Hauser of PLU is continuing to collect books and will be sending additional texts in the near future.’

‘We at Cayman Airways are very pleased to play a critical role in ensuring that these books are brought to the Cayman Islands so that the library at the ICCI can be rebuilt, so we have agreed to ship them free of charge from Miami to Grand Cayman,’ said Lynn Webster, Manager of Cayman Airways Cargo department.

March is Rotary International Literacy Month and in addition to the ICCI Book Drive Rotary Central is organising a series of activities to improve literacy initiatives in the Cayman Islands.

ICCI has about 1200 books and needs approximately 25,000. In addition to texts such as the ones donated on Monday, other research materials are needed such as journals, periodicals, online databases, and research and reference materials. Cash donations can also be made to the Rotary Central ICCI Book Drive.

If you have attended an overseas college or university, or know of someone who has, and would like to enlist the assistance of your alma mater in restocking the library please contact Nickii Sonnenberg at 345 939-9784, [email protected] or Ken Guiste at 345 925-3041. A packet listing the textbooks required to restore the library to its former status, a template request letter and shipping instructions are available. Cayman Airways is providing free shipping from Miami to Grand Cayman.
