Late cold front coming

A late-season northerly cold front will pass through Cayman on Tuesday, bringing fresh breezes, cooler temperatures, cloudiness and some rain through Thursday.

Although it once looked like the system would come through as a classic nor’wester Cayman’s Chief Meteorologist John Tibbetts said the system weakened and will now come through more northerly.

Rough seas in George Town and along Seven Mile Beach are still likely, particularly Wednesday.

‘We don’t need northwest winds to give big seas on the west coast,’ he said ‘Northerly winds will do it, too.’

The system is expected to pass southern Cuba on Monday and get to Cayman Tuesday morning or Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Tibbetts said.

‘It’s looking like this might go stationary above us or just to the east of us,’ he said, adding that the front will bring cloudiness and rain showers.

Winds on Tuesday should only be 10 to 15 knots.

‘That’s enough to get the west coast on the muddy side,’ Mr. Tibbetts said. ‘You’ll see some swells.’

The winds will pick up to 15-20 knots from the north-northeast on Wednesday bringing four to six feet waves. Small craft operators are being advised to exercise caution in open waters, especially along the west coast on Wednesday.

The high on Tuesday is only expected to reach 81º on Tuesday and 83º on Wednesday and Thursday. Lows should dip to 72º on Wednesday.
