A father and daughter who disappeared during a dive at deep water Stingray City in the North Sound Tuesday were later found floating outside the sound’s waters in rough seas.
The two, who are vacationing here from Utah, USA, were alive and unhurt when they were discovered by a Department of Environment patrol boat late Tuesday morning. Officers on scene said the pair was extremely tired from swimming against a strong current in attempts to get back into the North Sound.
Neither required medical care. They were returned to the private vessel they began the dive from and were taken to Rum Point.
DoE Marine Enforcement Officer Clinton Nicholson first spotted the divers and was credited with making the rescue.
The two had been on a shallow dive in Stingray City and it was believed they had been pulled outside the North Sound by a current.
Although some rough seas were expected Tuesday because of a late season northerly cold front, marine inspectors determined that the North Sound was safe for travel in the morning.
DoE Marine Supervisor Mark Orr said there were four foot swells reported outside the North Sound Tuesday but that conditions inside the reef were manageable.
The weather patterns were expected to shift more north-easterly on Wednesday and Thursday which Mr. Orr said would make the North Sound more susceptible to rough weather.
