Creepy Crawly popular with Flighty Friends

The National Trust launched its newest activity last month called Creepy Crawly Flighty Friends.

The Creepy Crawly Flighty Friends activity is an indoor and outdoor activity that encourages students to conduct fieldwork and collect insects from around the Trust office in South Sound.

Students then study their findings back at the Trust House, using a digital microscope. The children also looked at specimens from the Trust’s Insectarium, including local butterflies and grasshoppers.

The activity is offered once a month as part of the National Trust calendar of events and is also available throughout the year to school groups.

Classes of any age can participate and the activity can be tailored to suit a wide range of age groups.

‘The programme is open to anyone and so far has been extremely popular with Year One teachers as their curriculum covers the study of insects’, said Marnie Laing, Education Programmes Manager for the National Trust.

‘The digital microscope allows for an in-depth look at the insect world and serves to highlight Cayman’s biodiversity’, added Ms. Laing.

This latest activity makes a total of 26 activities and presentations offered by the National Trust as part of the National Trust education programme. ‘Education is an important aspect of the work of the National Trust and we are constantly looking for new ways to expand our education programmes.

‘By creating new and exciting ways to learn about the nature and history of the Cayman Islands we are reaching out to wider cross-section of the community’, said Caroline Key, development and marketing manager for the National Trust.

The National Trust can tailor many of their activities and presentations to suit specific age groups, ranging from year 1 students all the way up to adults.

As well as having a regular presence in the schools and centres for higher education, the National Trust also offers presentations on the history and biodiversity of the Cayman Islands and the role of the National Trust to businesses in the public and private sector.
