Red Cross Month
The most used service of the Cayman Islands Red Cross is the one that most people don’t realise is actually a programme.
For many years the Cayman Islands Red Cross’ Thrift Shop has served the most vulnerable population in our community by offering new and gently used items such as clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances, household and other miscellaneous items, which were all generously donated by members of the community.
Like all Red Cross programmes, the Thrift Shop is open to all members of the community. However, the Thrift Shop works closely with the Department of Children and Family Services, where clients from the department can get items that they need at no cost to them using department issued vouchers; the Immigration Detention Centre, where the Thrift Shop donates clothing and shoes to refugees who are in need of it; the Probation Centre, where clients can earn community services hours by assisting in the maintenance of the shop; the RCIPS, by ensuring that their clients have appropriate clothing to appear in court; the Crisis Centre, by providing items to their clients free of charge; and the Lion’s Club Children’ reading programme, by providing them with children’s books.
The Thrift Shop also helps and supports those families in the community who are victims of disaster, be it an island wide disaster such as Hurricane Ivan, or an individual family’s disaster, such as house fire. The Thrift Shop provides these families with clothing, bedding, furniture and/or any other items that they are in need of.
When support is requested from neighbouring islands and other Red Cross Societies, the Thrift Shop will also lend a hand to the vulnerable overseas. In the past it ahs provided support to disaster victims abroad by sending items such as blankets, bedding, towels, and clothing.
While the shop is based at the Red Cross Headquarters building on Huldah Avenue, it does have an outreach programme named Deals on Wheels, the mobile thrift shop in the form of a trailer. Items from the shop are loaded up in the Red Cross trailer and taken to key locations in each district so that residents from that area can enjoy the great bargains of the Red Cross in their own community thus saving on time, effort, and gas.
Deals on Wheels goes to the different districts one Saturday of every other month with the exception of the month of May.
As a celebration of Red Cross Month, Deals on Wheels goes to every district in May.
This year, Deals on Wheels took its merchandise to North Side on 3 May and East End on 10 May.
