Gary’s return marred by All Stars

Cayman 1

Clarendon All Stars 2

Cayman warmed up for the second round of the Digicel Cup next month with two matches against a visiting Clarendon All Stars side over the weekend.

The first game at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Saturday was an entertaining affair even if the scoreline did not go in Cayman’s favour.

Cayman started brightly and Gary Whittaker confirmed his Digicel Cup credentials with a superb header to put them in the lead after five minutes. It was his first game back after a long break for the national side.

Whittaker goal came from a precise cross by Kingsley Wellington who had a great game himself.

But Cayman could not capitalise after that bright start and for long spells the Jamaicans were the more threatening.

They converted their superior possession after the break when the constantly dangerous Kevin Mighty fired in a low shot after 65 minutes and Marlon Ellis hit in a free kick 15 minutes later for the winner.

Mighty lived up to his name and caused the Cayman defence all kinds of problems throughout with his trickery, but he spoilt an otherwise flawless display by diving theatrically hoping for a penalty only to get booked by referee Livingston Bailey.

Ellis’s shot was not a great one and substitute keeper Miguel Pitta was annoyed with himself for allowing the ball to go under his body. To be fair, the ball bounced awkwardly just in front of him, but it wasn’t a difficult shot to stop.

Despite the loss, there were some encouraging displays by Caymanians, particularly Benjamin Cupid and Tom Elliot in defence.

Captain Elliot was coming back after a broken ankle had kept him out all summer.

Cayman played the All Stars again last night.
