Don’t risk children’s lives

Despite a recent media and enforcement campaign by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, drivers in Cayman Brac are continuing to put their children’s lives at risk.

During an operation carried out on Wednesday in the vicinity of Cayman Brac Day Care Centre, a number of drivers were prosecuted for carrying unsecured children and for speeding.

Sergeant Matthew Dawson said: ‘Concerned members of the community and teachers are highlighting the fact that a significant number of drivers on the island are carrying children unsecured in their vehicles, while others drive in excess of the speed limit outside schools at busy periods.

‘In order to prevent the tragic loss of a child due to unsafe driving practices, similar operations will be carried out over the coming weeks in an attempt to educate drivers of the risks they are taking,’ Sergeant Dawson added. ‘We have a zero tolerance approach to this and any offenders will find themselves before the courts or with a costly ticket.’

Anyone with information about crime taking place in the Cayman Islands should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS). All persons calling crime stoppers remain anonymous, and are eligible for a reward of up to $1000, should their information lead to an arrest or recovery of property/drugs.
