Former Wimbledon tennis pro Warren Urquhart and his team of coaching professionals at Cayman Sports have brought to Cayman the fitness workout that is sweeping across America.
Cardio Tennis is a new fun, group activity featuring fast paced drills and exercise stations to give an ultimate high energy workout and combines traditional tennis practice with other endurance exercises.
Anyone looking for a great new way to get in shape and burn calories while improving their tennis skills, then Cardio Tennis might be the answer.
Each class is one hour long with a short warm up and cool down,
Based at the Camana Bay tennis courts, Urquhart is running one hour Cardio Tennis classes from 5.30pm-9.30pm Monday to Thursday, as well as morning and afternoon classes on Saturdays.
There’s also weekday morning classes at several Seven Mile Beach locations from 6-8am for people who are looking for a pre work session, as well as classes from 8-10am.
Cardio Tennis is designed for players of all levels, with drills geared for both existing and beginner players to get a great cardio workout while improving their skills.
Urquhart controls the activity so he challenges clients’ ability and fitness levels while keeping them in the right heart rate zone for longer.
He said: ‘The goal is to reach 65-85 per cent of your maximum heart rate and sustain that for 45 minutes.
‘You will have short cycles of high intensity workouts and periods of rest similar to interval training and when you are not hitting the ball you are doing sideline exercises.
‘Although you are playing tennis, the primary focus is on getting a great workout.’
Urquhart added: ‘People are always looking for something new to mix up their normal fitness routine.
‘As opposed to running and hitting the gym which can be repetitive and boring, Cardio Tennis offers an energetic fitness alternative, in a fun social environment.
‘During each hour you will improve your tennis skills, burn a ton of calories, get a total body workout, and best of all you are having fun and working on your health and longevity.’
The Cardio Tennis classes are for all levels of players and Urquhart ensures that the groups are as evenly matched as possible with several advanced groups a week for the islands stronger players, as well as classes geared for the beginner so they are not intimidated on the tennis court.
‘Cardio Tennis has many benefits for the beginner. They get to experience tennis at a fast and exciting pace and they get to hit all the strokes during each class in a non threatening environment. And as a coach controls the hitting it helps beginners who may normally spend most of their time on the tennis court chasing balls around.
‘From beginners to accomplished tennis players, Cardio Tennis increases fitness, helps reaction time and hand eye coordination, improves speed and agility, and enhances your movement and balance.
Urquhart feels Cardio Tennis appeals to anyone bored with the same old fitness routine and wants to improve their skills.
Classes are $20 per person. They began on Monday and are running for seven weeks until December 20
