The man who was supposed to be taking over the helm of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service next month has decided not to take the job.
In a statement released this afternoon, Governor Stuart Jack has confirmed that Royce Hipgrave has decided not to accept the position of Acting Police Commissioner.
Mr. Hipgrave advised the Governor of his decision on Wednesday.
“There was an aspect of the job that was not acceptable to Mr. Hipgrave,” Governor Jack said in his statement. “Unfortunately, after further discussions, this could not be resolved.”
Mr. Jack’s statement did not elaborate on what the “unacceptable aspect” of the top cop’s job might be.
Calling Mr. Hipgrave’s decision a “setback” for the RCIPS, the Governor indicated that steps have already been taken to identify a new Acting Police Commissioner in the interim until a full-time permanent Police Commissioner can be found.
Until a new acting commissioner is named, Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Ennis will serve as acting commissioner of the RCIPS.
Former Police Commissioner Stuart Kernohan was fired on Tuesday and has been off the job since March while being investigated for alleged misconduct in a public office. Mr. Kernohan has never been arrested or charged in the case.
Acting Police Commissioner David George has served as Mr. Kernohan’s replacement, but has told the Governor he will be leaving the island at the end of November.
