Kids tri something new

A week after the grownups had their shot at glory with the Turtle Tri, it is the turn of the younger generation as the Caykids Christmas Tryathlon takes to the road on Sunday.

The event features the same three events that make up a standard triathlon namely swimming, cycling and running, but with distances more appropriate to young participants. It starts at 8am from Public Beach.

All three sports are already very popular in their own right, but combining them creates a new and fulfilling challenge likely to capture youthful minds.

Students from seven to ten years of age will complete a 100m swim, followed by a 3km bike and a 500m run.

For the somewhat older competitors, the 11 to 14 age group will complete a 200m swim, a 6km bike and a 1km run.

The event is non competitive in nature which makes it the perfect introduction to the sport.

Those not quite ready to take on all three disciplines by themselves can also take part as a team.

All participants will receive a certificate, a medal, a T-shirt as well as a chance to win one of the great spot prizes. There will also be refreshments for the participants, with a post race pizza party.

Registration for the event will take place on race day from 7:00 am to 7:45 am at the open lot next to the Courtyard Marriott on West Bay Road. Participants can also enter online by e-mailing an entry form to [email protected].

Parents or legal guardians will need to be present on race day in order to sign waiver forms before the start of the race.

In the spirit of the season, each participant is asked to bring a gift or non-perishable food item to the race. Everything that is collected will be distributed on island through Child and Family services and go to those in need this festive season.

The goals of the event is to promote physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle and community involvement among Cayman’s youth. Organised by the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association, the event has regularly drawn in excess of 100 participants.
