Cayman falters

Cricketers from the Cayman Islands have once again come up short in international competition.

Last weekend Cayman missed out on a berth in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Cayman lost by 82 runs to Afghanistan to give the Afghanis the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3 title and an automatic berth in the world cup qualifiers.

Cayman showed poor fielding in the match and, in spite of taking the two openers cheaply, could not silence the bats through the middle of the order.

Afghanistan would get a respectable total of 230-8 off 50 overs while Cayman would struggle to 148 all out in 45 overs after a 41-3 opening spell.

Afghanistan captain Narooz Mangal (70) was named man-of-the-match as he slammed seven fours over 89 balls.

The side played alongside Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Argentina in the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3 playoffs.

With the loss Cayman, alongside Argentina and Papua New Guinea, are relegated to WCL Div. 4 and that will play in 2010.

Meanwhile Uganda followed Afghanistan’s winning ways taking down Argentina by 99 runs.
