A Royal Cayman Islands Police officer has been suspended from driving police vehicles following what investigators said was a DUI incident last month on North Sound Road.
The officer, who is not being identified by the Caymanian Compass because he has not been charged, was arrested on 17 January on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
A department response to Compass questions about the incident said the male officer was off-duty at the time of the crash, driving an unmarked police car when the accident happened.
According to a department spokesperson, the suspension from driving police vehicles essentially means the officer has been assigned to desk duties until his case is dealt with.
RCIPS Superintendent Mike Needham indicated in the statement that the police investigation into the matter has been completed and that the legal department of the Cayman Islands Attorney General’s office would be making a determination on charges.
