The new eight-a-side football tournament that mixes Corporate teams with the best of John Gray High reached round two of the competition last week when DHL played Digicel on Monday evening at Cayman Prep.
DHL dominated the early exchanges against a shorthanded Digicel team. However strikers Gary ‘Wiz’ Whittaker and brother Duran ‘Trinni’ Whittaker struggled to create any decent scoring chances against a stout Digicel defense.
It was Digicel who opened the scoring when Lovane Joven upended Chris Ordolis in the box and Ordolis got up and slotted home the penalty kick.
Midway through the second half Ordolis made it 2-0 with a fine strike and Digicel were looking at their second win of the tournament.
However with five minutes remaining, DHL’s Thomas Bush scored bringing his team back into the contest. Then with seconds remaining on the clock Whittaker slammed home the equalizer sending the DHL fans crazy.
On Wednesday evening Digicel were playing again, this time against John Gray High. This contest ended up being another very close affair with both sides struggling to break down each other and create clear-cut scoring chances.
As the evening heat took its toll the second half of the contest started to open up. Declan Cassidy and Chris Ordolis both came close to scoring for Digicel during a five minute spell of pressure midway through the half. However it was John Gray’s Gerome Graham who came closest to scoring when he saw the ball rocket back off the post from a finely taken shot. The game ended 0-0.
Digicel remain top of the table with their second point of the week, followed by DHL in second and Butterfield in third place.
This evening DHL plays Butterfield before John Gray High take on Maples on Wednesday evening.
