Royal Cayman Islands Police said the truck’s driver, a 21-year-old male, apparently fell asleep at the wheel while travelling along Stake Bay Road. The truck went through a fence, crashed into the front of a house which contained the dress store and eventually stopped after it slammed head first into a tree.

The truck’s back wheels actually came off in the collision and the vehicle was totalled in the wreck, but the driver was unhurt.

Police said the young man actually alerted police to the accident by flagging down another motorist at 3.30am Saturday.

According to witnesses, the dress store, owned by IdaLee Scott, lost three of walls and most of its merchandise in the crash. The neighbouring Humane Society thrift shop also sustained some roof damage from the impact.

No charges had been filed in the crash at press time.
