Prep to stage Rats! musical

 Cayman Prep and High School’s
musical Rats! – billed as an energetic musical – will be staged on Thursday, 18
March, for three consecutive nights.

According to its director Kathryn Griffiths,
the production is based on Robert Browning’s poem The Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Rats! is a new look at the story
with memorable music and witty lyrics, as composed by Nigel Hess. The rats who
plague Hamelin are punks and the Pied Piper has the charisma of a rock star.

According to Mrs. Griffiths, the play
was chosen for its “audience appeal, lively music score and its one hour
running time.”

With a cast of over 60 students, who
will sing, skateboard and tumble across the stage, the director said that there
will be plenty of action to keep the audience entertained.

She said that there would be
notable performances by the principal characters, including Ashwin Murugesu (Rat
Leader), Melanie Ebanks and Nina Foster (Piper), Neith Rheingold (Mayor of
Hamelin), and Alyssa McLaughlin (Crippled Child).

The director also spoke about the
hard work that had been put into making the production a success: “Rats! has
given many of our talented students the opportunity to shine… The rehearsal
process has also taught them the valued performance skills of discipline, team
work and organisation,” she said.

“The school’s Creative and Performing
Arts faculty have worked together closely to make this musical possible.”

Performances of Rats! Start at 7pm
in the Walkers Road Hall. Tickets, priced $15 (adults), $10 (children (5-15))
and $5 (under 5s), are available at Cayman Prep and High School’s Smith Road
