Police: Boyfriend of accident victim not drunk

Royal Cayman Islands
Police said Friday that one of the drivers arrested in connection with a fatal
accident on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway this week was not drunk at the time
the wreck occurred.

The man – who is the
boyfriend of the young woman that died in Tuesday morning’s wreck – was
initially arrested on suspicion of drink driving. However, a police spokesperson
said that further testing determined the man was not drunk at the time and would
therefore not be facing any DUI charges.

The other driver
involved in the crash, an 18-year-old woman, is still under investigation for
drink driving but has not been formally charged with a crime, the spokesperson
said.

For now, the male
driver in the wreck has been released without charges. Police said they were
still looking at other aspects of the incident from early Tuesday and could not
immediately state whether the man would be cleared of all wrong-doing in the
crash.

“Enquiries into the
cause of the accident are still progressing,” a police statement read.

Tuesday’s 12.30am
crash on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway killed 24-year-old FederAnn Faustino, who
was a passenger in the male driver’s Honda Civic.
