Plenty to cheer about

The Cayman Islands Softball
Association sent a male and female team to the 2010 Nicaraguan International
Softball Tournament held in Miami, Florida earlier this month. The teams did
not make it to the finals, however, they performed well.

There were 13 male and six female
teams participating from New York, Washington, California, Miami, Nicaragua and
the Cayman Islands. Cayman’s men were the defending champions, however, they
lost in their first game against Old Bank Miami, who made it to the finals, but
they did win their other three games.

In the female division the Cayman
Islands only managed to play two of their four scheduled games due to weather
(lightning storm on both days). Cayman Islands first faced Reunited on Saturday
but due to the weather could not complete the game. On Sunday they faced Miami
Stars and won 24-1. The field had to be cleared for several hours due to stormy
weather. Once the clearance was given to use the fields it was decided that the
unfinished game from Saturday would be completed and the winner would face
defending champions Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua for the finals.

The Cayman Islands female team held
their ground and the game went to extra innings, however, Reunited came out
victorious by one run.

The champions of the tournament
were Old Bank Washington and Reunited were the female winners.

The Nicaraguan International
Softball Tournament 2011 will be held in Corn Island, Nicaragua. Organiser
Marlon Thomas said: “The Cayman Islands Softball Association would like to
express gratitude to supporters and sponsors such as Cayman Islands Olympic
Committee, Cayman Airways, Digicel, Atlantic Store and Cayman Islands
Department of Tourism that contributed in one way or another. Also a thank you
to the players.”
