Local golf may be heading into its
off-season but a recent tournament is sure to have players feeling positive
vibes for some time.
The Cayman Islands Golf Association
recently hosted the 18th annual President’s Trophy Golf Tournament. The popular
tournament, which pits golfers of all handicaps against each other in stroke
play, saw a field of 70 men and women battling for the trophies.
In extremely windy golfing
conditions, the competition was tough but exciting and in all divisions new
champions were crowned.
Especially exciting, was the play
of the talented 15-year-old Emily Ribbins, who not only shot a sparkling net 69
to win the junior trophy but whose score was also good enough to claim the
Ladies title as well. Three shots back in second place was last year’s Ladies
champion Nisha Bismillah.
Ian Brellisford took the Men’s
title with a net 70, besting runner-up Jeff Mansi by a single stroke, followed
closely by Adam Nasheed on 73 who took third place on a count back. In the
Senior Mens division, Stewart Freeman won the title with a net 71, with Robert
Oosterwyk taking the runner-up position with a net 76, also on a count back.
The Low Gross winners in the Ladies and Men’s divisions respectively were Nitti
Howe with a score of 84 and Tracy Moore with a 77.
Awards were also presented for
closest to pins on the par threes. Excellent shot-making by Robert Chilman on
hole one, Joel Dodson on hole five and Jeff Mansi on hole 9 claimed these
During the prize-giving ceremony,
golf association president Judy Van Liere thanked the North Sound Club for
hosting the event and in particular club pro Mike Touchette, as well as the
many sponsors who attributed to the success of the tournament. These included
KPMG, Camana Bay, Deloittes, Conyers, Dill and Pearman, USB, CML and Deutsche
Bank. Sunshine Suites created a great spread of food for the hungry golfers
after the tournament play.
Upcoming events include the second
annual golf association Shamble on Sunday 17 October and the golf association
Pairs tournament on 6 November, both of them at the North Sound Club.
