Gaza returns to haunt Roma

Top of the table clashes are always
filled with high drama so it was not surprising that there was never a dull
moment when Premier League leaders Elite faced Roma United on Sunday.

Both sides finished with 10 men but
thankfully, it was played at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay in good spirits
and ended without acrimony.

The first serious incident after a
lively cut and thrust opening was when Roma’s Nikardo Beckford was sent off for
dissent. Alex Belcher has been a goal machine for Elite this season and he
almost got another when a deft lob hit the crossbar. The ball bounced out and
Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright was perfectly placed to head in against his former side.
No wonder Gaza raced the length of the field in celebration. Belcher thought he
had scored when he slotted home after a clever through ball from Rene Carter
but it was ruled offside.

After the break, Elite were reduced
to 10 men too as referee Christofel Stewart sent Belcher off for what he
considered to be exaggerating injury after being fouled going up for a header.
It seemed harsh and Elite technical director Greg Ebanks was flabbergasted by
the curious decision. It was Belcher’s second yellow and looked unwarranted.
The decision certainly upset Elite but they knuckled down and a few minutes
later Carter finished off a beautiful move to put them two up.

Roma fought back and prolific
scorer Kevin McField came off the subs’ bench to scramble one home to ensure a
tight finish, but Elite held on to take maximum points from the 2-1 victory.

In the earlier game at Ed Bush,
George Town made it another miserable night for defending league champions
Scholars International with a 2-1 win. Lennox Bryan and Fabian Malcolm got the
GT goals and Erick Brown got his fifth of the season for Scholars. George
Town’s Junior Fisher was sent off in the first half.

At the TE McField sports Centre
Annex young Bodden Town gained three points off East End by beating them 4-2.
Theron Wood got a hat-trick and Gary Blake scored the other for Bodden Town.
Carson Fagan and Marvin Grant got East End’s. In the other game at the TE
McField, Future Sporting Club fought hard to share points with Tigers 4-4.
James Ebanks and Paul Brown got two apiece for Future and the Tigers scorers
were Alain Grant (2), Nahun Rodriguez and Lauren Bennett. In the CIFA Foster’s
League on Saturday, Academy outplayed Prospect 3-1, Elite defeated George Town
4-2 and Sunset drew 1-1.
