Public transport depot back at library

The public transportation depot in
George Town moved back to the location adjacent to the library on Friday after
nearly a year at the Old Tower Building site on North Church Street.

The new location is on Edward
Street between the George Town Public Library and CNB, near the library car
park.

The previous, temporary location
near the water was due in large part to local building construction in the
library area in the past year, according to Durk Banks, director of the Public
Transport Board.

“The bus depot was moved to
facilitate the redevelopment of the George Town Library,” he said.

Rickie Miller is one of roughly 30
bus drivers at the depot.  He also acts
as the primary liaison between the drivers and the transport board, as well as
the treasurer of the local bus drivers association.

“The difference is, locals weren’t
coming to the bus depot,” he said.  “The
public is happy that we’re back.”

Now the major problem is that
cruise ship passengers cannot see the depot location when they exit the cruise
ships and enter Grand Cayman.

“Tourists aren’t informed about the
buses, so now they have to come into town to know about the bus depot,” Mr.
Miller said.  “We asked to have signs in
front of the Scotia Bank and the waterfront.”

Mr. Miller is hoping that the
planning board will allow the drivers to hold signs with directions to their
depot location.

They drivers have settled back in,
though, with construction under way for a dispatch office near the road.

“The feedback has been positive.
The bus depot is paved and well lit,” Mr. Miller said.  “The bus depot is centrally located to all
the businesses and should be convenient for everyone.”

Restrooms are also planned to be
built near the rear of the library car park and bus depot, but there hasn’t yet
been a time frame for construction.
