Prospect Primary School students
ended the first six weeks of the school year by celebrating culture and
diversity in honour of United Nations Day, officially designated as 24 October.
Students performed songs and poetry
in several different languages while wearing native costumes from Japan and
Ghana, among other countries, in the special school assembly.
Prospect principal Gloria Pollard
said it is important that students develop international awareness.
“It helps them learn tolerance for
people and cultures that are unlike their own,” she said. “It also enhances their sense of
international responsibility.”
Additionally, students presented a
$400 donation to the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens during breast cancer
awareness month. The money was raised from a dress-pink day walk.
Red Bay Primary School students
also celebrated families in different cultures.
Children in the Year 1 class
observed the customs of a Chinese family for a day by wearing traditional
Chinese clothing and eating lo mein and fried rice.
United Nations Day is aimed at
highlighting the goals and achievements of the parent organisation. This year, the focus was on the eight UN
Millennium Development Goals.
In his UN Day address,
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the day was dedicated to doing more.
“More to protect those caught up in
armed conflict, to fight climate change and avert nuclear catastrophe,” he
said. “More to expand opportunities for
women and girls, and to combat injustice and impunity. More to meet the Millennium Development
Goals.”
