Politicians are not noted for their
athletic prowess and that was true of education minister Rolston Anglin. But in
only six months his body shape has gone from portly to athletic by losing 35lbs
through improving eating habits and exercising.
Anglin did so well that he almost
beat champion boxer Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker in the two mile Breeze Fusion
run on Saturday. Now if he is so close in a road race, with a bit of training,
imagine how well he could do against Killa in the ring! Anglin – who is related
to boxing coach Donie Anglin – joked: “Well, you know, I’m a competitive spirit
so you never know, right?” Whittaker is having trouble finding his next
opponent, so he need look no further.
Losing all that weight was a
fantastic achievement considering much of Anglin’s life involves sitting behind
a desk or in meetings. “I’ve been jogging, watched what I eat and decided to
change my lifestyle,” the MLA for West Bay said. “Diets don’t work, it’s about
changing your lifestyle and habits. And I feel great. This is the first time
I’ve come out and ran since high school, so it’s a few decades. But it felt
good, it was good competition. The thing that is always good about running or
walking is that there is no fee, not for membership or gym. Nothing. It’s all
for free and all for your health, so that’s what people need to do.
Anglin can boast a rarity amongst
politicians, he actually practices what he preaches. “It’s all about healthy
lifestyle and healthy living. When I made the policy decision that we were
going to change the canteen food standard for schools I decided to change mine
as well. I thought if the kids are going to do it then so am I. But I kept that
a secret until the weight came off.”
