Fresh Market @ Reflections is the latest open air market to offer farm fresh goods from Cayman’s farmers and producers in the Reflections parking lot off Godfrey Nixon Way on Fridays from 3-6.30pm.
The weekly market was the brainchild of the store’s management who saw the need to offer the residents and workers in central George Town a conveniently located fresh goods venue and to promote local agriculture. The market is open to all the island’s farmers and producers, several of whom already operate stalls at both Market at the Grounds and at the Camana Bay Market.
Through the initiative, a partnership between Market at the Grounds and the Reflections stores, Fresh Market @ Reflections joins Market at the Grounds in Savannah, Cayman’s principal market, covering the Eastern districts (7am-12am Saturdays) and the Camana Bay Market, which primarily services residents of the Seven Mile Beach corridor and those that work in and in the vicinity of the new town (Wednesdays).
The Agricultural Society’s Administrative Coordinator, Kerry Forbes, said, “This market in addition to the [others] are all designed as outlets for the island demographics and the provision of fresh produce. It is a vehicle for the Cayman community to meet and interact with our farmers, artisans and crafts people whilst enjoying a unique cultural experience.”
Reflections’ Purchaser/Sales & Marketing Supervisor, James Alenton, said, “Reflections is pleased to promote the benefits of buying local and to provide the greater community with access to locally grown and healthy food.”
Under the partnership agreement, the Friday market is managed by the Agricultural Department, which deals with vendors, with Reflections providing the facilities and open-sided tents for the sellers.
Local producer Zelmalee Ebanks of Willie’s Farms/Cayman Exotics said, “this newest market is laying a foundation and has the potential for further expansion. Summertime is our fruit time and so at the moment there’s not a lot of produce available its now mainly the staples like green bananas, pumpkin, plantain and some green vegetables. Given the success of Market at the Grounds we look forward to the success of this latest venture.”
David Cross owner of Caribo’s speciality sausages and another vendor who sells at all three markets said, “Markets are a way of selling directly to the public and over time it helps develop and advertise your business.”
Shoppers at Fresh Market @ Reflections can also buy fish & fritters, soaps and candles and plants. Parking is free.
