Store clerk, manager foil theft

An observant cashier and
an apparently quick-footed manager foiled a theft attempt at the airport
Foster’s grocery store early Thursday afternoon.

According to the cashier,
whose name the Caymanian Compass is not releasing to protect her from
retaliation, two young men entered the store just after noon Thursday. One
stayed by the store entrance, the other picked up a cart and started putting
items into it.

A short while later, the
clerk said the would-be thief – identified as a 16-year-old boy by police –
tried to wheel the cart full of groceries out the door without paying for it.
The other young man had left some time before that, she said.

At that point, the store
clerk followed the teenager and grabbed him by the shirt. She said she called
store manager Woody Foster over to help detain the young man.

“He wanted to fight, but
he couldn’t because we had a hold of him,” the cashier said.

Mr. Foster credited the
cashier for the capture.

“The cashier was quite instrumental in detaining the person who had
to be handled forcefully to get him into the office to await the police,” he

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers said the teen was arrested for
theft (shoplifting) and was also in breach of a juvenile restraining order.
