The annual Cayman Islands Football Association Digicel Cup competition kicks off this Sunday 19 December, at two venues with eight Premier League teams contending for a hold on the coveted trophy which is now celebrating its sixth season.
Defending champions George Town are in sixth position in the Premier League with 12 points and will face off with top of the table team and former Digicel Cup holders Elite at the TE McField Sports Centre at 7pm
Elite with 26 points have not lost a game this season. Can the magic of Tex Whitelocke and Justin Pierre in the forward line up for George Town get past the tough Elite defenders Jermaine Wilson, Gabriel Godet, Abijah Rivers and James Josephs in goal?
On the other hand, it’s evident that GT keepers Clay Coleman and Miguel Pitta have both been in good form, but can their defence with the likes of Leighton Elliott, Kemar Barton and Junior Fisher manage to keep the charging Alex Belcher, Derrin Ebanks, Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright and Jairo Sanchez at bay? Certainly, this will be the game to watch.
Bodden Town will face East End at the T.E. McField Sports Centre at 5:pm. Presently, Bodden Town are fifth in the Premier League with 13 points, while newcomers East End are at the bottom of the table with eight.
Meanwhile, in West Bay at the Ed Bush Stadium at 5pm, 2008 title holders Roma United will meet the roaring Tigers in a tough game. Nahun Rodriquez is in top form and scored a hat-trick in his last outing, so will have to be marked closely by Roma’s defenders Morris Brown, Gabre Dickens, Naresh Hart and Omar Stewart.
Scholars International are in second position in the Premier League and face second-to-last team Future SC in the 7pm game. With the return of national representative Jermaine Brown in goal, Scholars International may be able to get past Future.
The draw was conducted recently by Marketing Communications Manager A. Sharez Laws and President of CIFA Jeffrey Webb at the Digicel Corporate office in Camana Bay in the presence of representatives from the participating clubs and CIFA staff members.
This kick off will mark the sixth staging of this prestigious competition which saw the now defunct Money Express team as the first team to take the Digicel Cup followed by Scholars, Roma United, Elite and defending champions George Town.
