Joseph Benfield of the Optimist Club of Bridgetown, Barbados, is the 2010-2011 Governor of Optimist International Caribbean District.
He takes office under the theme Hands across the Caribbean – Helping Our Children to Shine, and committing his leadership to addressing the needs of the children across the Caribbean while lifting the profile of Optimism in the region.
“As Optimists, we shine our light of hope and optimism everywhere, but we must give our attention to the real reason we joined the movement in the first place – the children” Mr. Benfield said.
“Everywhere around us there are those children and young people who need our help. Let us reach out and address the needs of our communities: The crumbling infrastructure that needs attention so that our children can go to school in an environment conducive to learning; the children who need help with reading and math but whose parents have to choose between paying for such help and putting food on the table; or the family that cannot outfit their children for school with either clothing, shoes, books or equipment”, says the Governor.
Mr. Benfield is the fourth Barbadian to be elected head of the Caribbean District, which started in August 1992. He is the Chief Executive Officer of JOSA Investments, Barbados, and he is also Chief Financial Officer to the Barbados Local Organising Committee for the ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007.
A graduate of Pace University, New York, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration – public accounting, he is also a Certified Public Accountant with international standing.
