Ajoni’s Primera handles well

Motorsports in the Cayman Islands revved ahead with last month’s drag race. Now autocross slides onto the scene in a few days.

The first official event for the Cayman Motorsports Association is on this Sunday 20 February. The Time Attack series launches its 2011 season opener at the Progressive Loop at 2pm.

Mandatory sign-up is slated for Friday 18 February. Parkers auto supply store hosts registration at 7pm. A special focus this year is on increasing the amount of competitors and members of the public interested in racing are encouraged to attend registration.

The 2011 season will have much to build on. Last year’s races were tight and the leaderboards saw a number of drivers claim props consistently. Among them was West Bay native Ajoni Ambersley. A competitor the last few years, Ambersley was a frontrunner in the Two Wheel Drive category behind the wheel of his black Nissan Primera.

The All Wheel Drive category should also be interesting. Michael Weatherford quickly became a force on the scene in the Ace Paint Subaru Impreza and time will tell if fellow Impreza drivers David Bowerman and Chuck Thompson can eclipse him. There is also intrigue in the Unlimited class where legends in Cayman motorsports like Keith Tibbetts III (Valvoline Impreza Sti), Ian Tibbetts (Chevy Corvette) and Bobby Hulse (Toyota Altezza) will tussle for the crown,
