Little sharks ravage peewee Panthers

After a long winter break, a version of the world’s coolest sport skated back into action in the Cayman Islands.

Kings Sports Centre saw the Spring edition of the annual Logic Youth Roller Hockey League launch last Saturday 6 February. The league’s Spring term continued where it left off in December, with eight different games on the day.

Opening up the games was the Peewee division, with the Appleby Sharks taking on a shorthanded Stuarts’ Panthers bench. The Sharks came away a 7-2 victory with Thomas Bishop and league rookie Keegan O’Connor earning the team’s Player of the Game. Nicole Whittaker, the former Vampt Oilers’ star who was traded over the break, earned the Panthers Most Valuable Player honours with her stellar defensive efforts.

Coach Darryl Hather stated after the game, “Our team was missing some key players today, but they played well. We weren’t able to capitalize on our chances, with their goalie (Thomas Bishop) making some key saves.”

The second Peewee game saw the Conyers Canucks also playing shorthanded defeat the KPMG Senators 5-3, with Canucks’ power-forward Mack Moser scoring an impressive four goals. Moser was named game MVP for the Canucks, however the team’s coaches extended that honour to all five players for their combined efforts on the rink.

In the Atom division, the Eats Blazers and Cedrus Capitals entertained spectators with 6-6 tie. The two teams have proven to be very evenly matched throughout the season as they sit at number one and number two in the league standings. The WestStar Wild defeated the Animal House Penguins 7-2 in the second game with Jona Narborough leading his team with an impressive five-goal day. The performance earned Narborough the team’s player of the day honours. Alex Jones (Capitals), Doug Rowland (Capitals), Jered Holmes (Blazers), Eleri Stabler (Blazers) and Lex Dobson (Penguins) were also awarded their respective teams’ MVP status on the day.

The 8U Novice league saw the largest growth over the break. That growth would translate into a very competitive division as witnessed by the two close games on Saturday. Game one saw the dms Bruins defeat the Dart Ducks 5-4 with Jabari Walrond earning the Bruins player of the game with his stellar performance. Game two between the XN Financial Flames and Walkers Blue Iguanas ended in a 7-7 tie. In addition to Walrond, MVP honours on the day were awarded to Ryan Godwin (Flames), Louis Vagniez (Flames), Cassidy Amesbury (Blue Iguanas), Dylan Lewis (Blue Iguanas), William Dyer (Ducks) and Eliseo Davis (Ducks).

Heading into the Spring, the league has several developments underway including the 2011 Cayman Islands Kings Travel Team Hockey Season and the first league-wide fund-raiser. The new fund-raiser, which has been jointly sponsored by the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League along with the Department of Tourism, marks a first for the growing Logic Youth Roller Hockey League at Kings Sports Centre.
