Tigers maul out of sorts Elite

Cayman’s league football took a break over the weekend as FA Cup action took over and teams from the First Division were mixed with Premier League opposition.

There are always upsets in one-off cup matches and the biggest came on Saturday at the TE McField Annex when First Division team Cayman Athletic thrashed Premier side Future 5-1. Gary ‘The Wizzard’ Whittaker, who has served football for years in style, got two of the Athletic goals.

One of the best games came when Tigers, who are inconsistent in the Premier League, took on the mighty Elite, who are unbeaten in the league and only need one more win to win the championship, but went out in the first round of the Digicel Cup.

Elite hoped for a longer run in the FA Cup but against the fierce-tackling Tigers they were not going to gobble up this opposition so easily. Elite never really got into their rhythm and although they created more chances, they squandered them.

So it was no surprise that the ever lively Kirk ‘Dancer’ Rowe popped up near the end to smack in the winner and give Tigers a deserved 1-0 win. Sportingly, Elite technical director Greg Ebanks, made a point of congratulating all the Tigers team as they celebrated.

Tigers reached the FA Cup final last season when they were beaten 1-0 by George Town and hope to go one better this time.

In other matches, Bodden Town beat Cayman Brac 3-1, Roma overcame Sunset 3-2, Academy won 3-1 against Latinos, East End came from 3-1 down to defeat Scholars International 4-3 and Prospect and North Side drew 1-1.

The dates for the continuation of this competition will be announced soon.
