Willy Wonka woman brings sweet treat

Sweet-tooth fans turned out in force for Dylan Lauren of Dylan’s Candy Bar for her presentation and book signing at Books & Books last week.

Lauren was launching her book, Dylan’s Candy Bar: Unwrap Your Sweet Life.

In fact, the audience did get to unwrap something sweet – there was a giant, colourful, swirly lollipop on every chair in the store.

The author, and owner of the world’s biggest candy collection, explained how she was inspired as a child by the world of Willy Wonka and wanted to reproduce the wacky candy king’s famous but fictional sweet factory.

She took the audience through a tour of her book from a platform decorated in bright candy colours by Celebrations and took questions, ranging from what is her favourite candy (“I really love everything… On this trip, I’m really into gummy worms”) to how many fillings she has (no more now than before she got into the candy business; “My dentist says if you brush your teeth, you’re fine no matter what you eat. If you don’t brush your teeth and you eat candy, you’ll get cavities.”)

The colourful book is packed with fun facts about sweets, their history, background and uses. It includes chapters on how to use candy to decorate and entertain at weddings, baby showers, birthday parties and Halloween.

The book is packed with photographs of fabulous candies and chocolates, plus recipes and tips on how to use candy to make life brighter and better.

She says the book and her stores are not just for kids – in fact, the “Bar” in the stores’ title refers not just to a bar of candy – she has cocktail bars at her stores, too.

The author is daughter of clothing designer Ralph Lauren and her famous father’s influence has rubbed off somewhat – Dylan’s Candy Bar also has candy-inspired clothing.
