Local fast pitch softball recently got off to a fresh start.
The 29th Fast/Modified Pitch Softball League officially opened on Saturday. An opening ceremony and the first slate of male and female matches launched the 2011 campaign at the Field of Dreams in George Town.
On hand for the ceremony was guest speaker and director of sports Collin Anglin. He gave a brief speech that focused on having character in sports and setting an example for younger players. The master of ceremonies was league treasurer Ivy Robinson.
A number of sponsors were honoured on the evening including Michael Hemmings of Mike’s Ice. The company got an honorary plaque for being the 2010 season’s most outstanding sponsor.
From there came a trio of matches. Taking centre stage was last year’s mens champions the AI Rentals Patriots, who faced runners-up and 2009 champs Latinos. Among the notable players taking the field for the Patriots were 2010 home-run champion Bradimir Robinson, multi-sport star David Taylor and baseball stalwart Peter Whittaker. Latinos meanwhile featured names such as basketball player Sandi Jiminez, motorbike racer Humberto Rives and team sponsor/long-time baseball player Donald Watler.
Afterwards came a pair of women’s contests. Among the sides in action were 2010 champs Caledonian Bank Wildcats, CADC Stingers and the Western Union/Fidelity Bank Challengers. League matches are played both in West Bay and the Field of Dreams.
