The stage is set for two international friendly football games at the TE McField Sports Centre this coming weekend.
Cayman Islands Under-23s and the senior team face Jamaica Football Federation Digicel Premier League team Sporting Central from Clarendon on Saturday and Sunday at the TE McField.
As a curtain raiser both evenings Sunset meets Elite in the CIFA women’s FA Cup semis at 4:30pm on Saturday while on Sunday Scholars International face Future at the same time. The entry fee is 10.
The Cayman senior squad includes Tex Whitelocke, Arvid Harris, Oneil Taylor, captain Ian Lindo and Leighton ‘Rumpy’ Elliott.
These games are part of the strategies put in place to assist technical director Carl Brown in his preparations for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers later this year. The Cayman squads have been in training since January.
Despite not being in the top four contenders for the Digicel Premier League, Sporting Central are a well organised team and have gained respect for being one of the most feared teams from the South Central Confederation.
They are currently sixth and are unbeaten in their last 12 outings in the Premier League. The team boasts four Jamaican internationals in Andre Blake, Leaunghn Williams, Francois Swaby and Kadian Wynter.
The team’s defence consists of Dale Watson, Akeem Annakie, Christopher Banner, David Boswell and Gregory Lewis. In midfield they have Camaal Anthony, Keith Kelly, Kadian Wynter and Jamoly Powell and the strikers are Francios Swaby and Oneike Forde who are the team’s top scorers with nine and five goals respectively.
Garth Young, head coach, said: “We appreciate the invitation. We expect to represent well at this level to ensure that the Cayman Islands National team gets a high standard of competition to help to better prepare the team for their upcoming calendar of events. As the league stands we are in sixth position in the Digicel Premier League.
“We are a unit and believe in team effort. With the quality of experienced players coming to the Cayman Islands on this trip I expect two great games.”
